Morrigan's Cross by Nora Roberts...What can I say?
I first read this first novel of the trilogy when I was but a mere fifth-grader. I was enraptured by it then. Obsessed. I devoured it in one sitting and hunted for the rest of the series. I lived in this book for at least a good year before I moved on to my next fad.
But, recently, I spotted this little blue paperback at a library sale. I remembered it with such fondness that I decided to bring it home and give it a reread just to see if it really was as good as I remembered.
And, boy, did I get into it quick!
The story starts off on a cliff with one of the main characters, Hoyt, a medieval wizard, doing battle with Lilith, the queen of all vampires. How rad is that? I'll tell you. PRETTY RAD. And then, bam! Hoyt's brother (turned vampire and at Lilith's bidding) attacks. Action! Fighting! Magic stuff! It's like an action movie, only with less production value.
Yes, you do have to brace yourself for a fast-paced build. Like, marathon paced build. But you know what? Sometimes slow build is boring. Really, who wants to read a single novel about this wizard dude and his hot brother and their day-to-day lives? I mean, sign me up for some fan-fiction, but a whole novel? Pass. Anyway. I actually didn't mind this quick build. In my opinion, it leaves you more on the edge of your seat than a slower build would.
So, Hoyt wins the battle, gets visited by a goddess who warns him of what Lilith is capable of and what her plans are... Read mass destruction, world domination, you know, basic villain jazz. Goddess says, "Wizard dude, get five other people to join your team. Fight the evil vampire, save the world." She gives him some magic key that sends him to the future world of New York. Like I said, fast pace.
We meet some more pivotal characters and this is the cool part that I wish other authors would do more; each character gets their own...Style of language, I guess you could say when the chapters switch between them. It's great. You get to see inside the heads of those people. It helps you connect, you know?
The now group of four relocates to ye olde Ireland. Two new characters are introduced, we get a feel for them and then surprise! good ol' goddess shows up again with another magic key. They join the others in Ireland amid a cool fight in the forest. (Yeah! More action!)
We get some more background. Then some more action. Then we get some story line, then action. Actually... This is a lot like an action movie. There is a butt-ton of fight scenes, battles, and that jazz. if you're not into that kind of stuff, this whole series is not for you, friend.
Anyway, plot-twist, maybe I cried a little. New character, holy shit, she's a BAMF. Good stuff. And holy shit! Another plot twist! And fin. Book one ends.
So, yeah. Morrigan's Cross by Nora Roberts.
If you're into fast-paced, fantasy, adventure, or action-filled stories, definitely pick this book up. It's not gonna be for everyone, though. But it's still a favorite of mine!
